About Loyola University (Maryland)
Loyola University Maryland is a Roman Catholic, Jesuit private university in Baltimore, which is an independent city, as well as the largest city and the cultural center of the US State of Maryland. Baltimore was founded in 1729, being named after Lord Baltimore, who was the first Proprietary Governor of the Province of Maryland, and it is recognized today as a major USA seaport, with a population of nearly 640 000 inhabitants (2008).
Loyola University in Maryland was founded by John Early, along with 8 other members of the Society of Jesus, in 1852, being named after St. Ignatius of Loyola, who was the founder of the Society of Jesus, occupying today the 9th place among the 28 oldest Jesuit colleges and universities in the nation. The first campus was set in downtown Baltimore, on Holliday Street, the university being relocated to its final and current location, in 1922.
The student enrollment of Loyola University of Maryland was estimated at a number of over 3500 undergraduate and more than 2500 graduate students, from 34 states and 20 other countries, offering them various degree programs through Loyola College (former College of Arts and Sciences), the Joseph A. Sellinger, S.J. School of Business and Management, as well as through the School of Education, which has been one of the stronger academic pillars at Loyola, since 1946.
